Back several years ago, Java seemed to be the way to go for programming. In the interest of staying with the industry, I went out and got the obligatory “Teach Yourself Java in 21 days” book. Didn’t make it very far, as usual it’s hard to learn and retain from a book without a practical use for the new knowledge.
Several years later, as part of my regular job, I’m forced to use client applications that were written in Java. Without exception, these apps are memory-hogging pigs riddled with visual bugs. Invariably, after using a Java-based app for awhile, something odd happens where the GUI lies about what’s really happening in the background. The GUI claims an error condition when in reality norhing is wrong, and vice-versa.
I’ve never continued with trying to learn Java, and can’t imagine that will ever change. I’ll wait for the next big thing and hope it’s not such a horrible flop.
